"Protecting personal information: A guide for businesses"
Dama Brown is the Regional Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Southwest Region, where she oversees litigation involving unfair or deceptive acts or practices or rule violations. Prior to this, she was a staff attorney with the FTC in Atlanta. In that role, she brought regulatory enforcement actions against debt collectors, mortgage relief service providers, mortgage brokers, and precious metals dealers. She was the lead attorney in FTC v. American Precious Metals, LLC, a case in which the promoters of a bogus investment scheme agreed to a $24 million settlement to resolve charges that they conned consumers into buying precious metals on credit without clearly disclosing associated costs and risks. She also negotiated a $7.5 million settlement with Mortgage Investors Corp., representing the largest fine the FTC has ever collected for alleged "Do Not Call" violations and the first action enforcing the Mortgage Acts and Practices advertising rule. In recognition of her accomplishments, she received the FTC's Paul Rand Dixon and Janet D. Steiger awards for excellence. She joined the FTC in 2006 after spending ten years in private practice in metro Detroit.
